About Nimbus & Grum

Adventure, AI, and Audience

Nimbus & Grum is an illustrated novel series built for family read-aloud—one chapter at a time, one cozy night at a time. The stories are kid-safe, but they’re not “kiddy.” The plot is meant to reward attention: clues, callbacks, logic, emotional growth, and the kind of twisty structure that can keep an adult reader genuinely engaged while still landing gently for a younger listener.

A lot of storytelling equates “older audience” with “scarier” or “more adult.” I’m aiming for something different: grown-up plot complexity inside an age-appropriate world. Any sharper moments are rare, purposeful, and kept within a kid-safe emotional range—no gore, no explicit content as a shortcut to maturity. The challenge (and the fun) is building real mystery and momentum from choices, consequences, and discovery—so a curious five-year-old can enjoy the ride, and a thoughtful adult can enjoy how the ride is built.

The images and text are designed to work together. Sometimes an illustration shows something the text doesn’t say out loud. Sometimes the text frames what you’re seeing in a new way. It’s not quite a comic and not quite a picture book—more like a prose-led adventure where the visuals matter.

If you’re reading to a young listener who asks big questions, likes patterns, and wants the story to “make sense,” you’re in the right place. And if you’re the older reader who’s tired of bedtime stories that talk down to you—welcome. [This paragraph written by AI, for example]

Recommended: ages 5–12 as a read-aloud, and roughly 9+ for independent reading (depending on the kid). Adults encouraged.

Just as a heads up to anyone who is new to AI generated content, there is some really, really, weird stuff in these books. Some may seem like typos or misprints at first, but at least in Book 1, we intentionally left some of these artifacts in places exactly as we unearthed them, for the purpose of learning about AI and what it often does, sometimes unintentionally in the best way.

We also use AI to help keep all the names and places in the books unique and practically unreal. Some names may be updated as we research uniqueness or better pronunciation for read aloud, while keeping the story the same.
