Nimbus & Grum

Chapter One

Nimbus and Grum, The Skymirror

The Race Before the Sky

The morning sky over Glimmerglen was doing that thing again—glittering like a freshly shaken snow globe and buzzing with chatter. It could only mean one thing.

Race Day.

The Whirlwind Dash was the most chaotic, sky-swerving, wing-whipping race in the land, and this year, two unlikely flyers had signed up:
Nimbus the newly-winged unicorn, and Grum the condiment-fueled hot dog.

“This is a terrible idea,” Grum muttered as he strapped on his homemade ketchup jetpack, which was already leaking slightly from a questionable weld. “But also I might win. Which would be pretty cool.”

Nimbus grinned, stretching his gleaming green wings. “Just stick near me, Grum. We’ll breeze through it.”

They stood at the starting cloud next to dozens of other competitors: rocket raccoons, flying muffins, balloon-riders, a shrimp on a string glider, and most alarmingly, the Skyfang Spiralers—a team of intense, armor-wearing pegabirds who only spoke in synchronized squawks.

The official, a one-eyed owl in a judge’s hat, flapped above them with a megaphone.

“Fliers! Flyers! And sky-splorers of all shapes! Ready yourselves!”

Grum adjusted his goggles. “I can’t believe they let flying toast enter.”

“I can’t believe we’re doing this,” Nimbus whispered, his hooves clacking nervously on the starting cloud.

          Then—FWOOOMP!
The horn blasted, and the racers launched.

🌪️ Loops and Laughs

Nimbus soared. The sky welcomed him like an old friend. He whooshed through ringed hoops and pirouetted past puff-clouds, laughing with delight.

Grum, however, was shrieking.

“TOO FAST TOO FAST TOO FAST!”
He zipped erratically, his jetpack blasting out ketchup trails that formed accidental skywriting.

       YAAHHHHH!!!

One particularly twisty corkscrew turn brought Grum face-to-face with a giant kite shaped like a chicken. No time to dodge.
WHUMP.

He spun. The ketchup sputtered. The world twirled.
Then—CRASH.
Grum disappeared into a puff-tree with a very unheroic flump.

🥲 Silence on the Cloud

Nimbus turned back mid-loop. He abandoned the race and dove down, his wings slicing the air. Grum was lying in the tree’s feathery branches, groaning.

“My buns… my beautiful buns…”

Nimbus winced. “You okay?!”

Grum sat up slowly, covered in leaves and condiment goo. “I’m fine. Jetpack’s not. I think I’m grounded.”

He held up the twisted metal of his beloved flying pack. The ketchup valve was bent. The nozzle dribbled a sad drop onto his lap.

Nimbus looked at Grum, then up at the sky.

“We don’t have to finish the race,” he said gently.

Grum nodded. “Good. Because I’m done flying.”

🌌 That Night

Later, back at their cozy, cluttered house in Glimmerglen, Grum worked quietly in the corner, surrounded by wrenches and broken tubing.

Nimbus lay curled up by the fireplace, wings tucked, eyes heavy with thoughts. He drifted to sleep.

          And he dreamed.

A sea of stars above—no, below. Clouds shimmered in reverse. Floating castles upside-down, their towers dangling like chandeliers.
In the middle, a giant silver mirror hovered, rippling with light.

          Then, a voice.
Ancient. Echoing.

“When the winds remember, and the mirror breaks…
The sky will need a horn to mend it.”

Nimbus’s wings pulsed faintly in the dream. He stepped toward the mirror—

—and woke.

Grum was snoring. The broken jetpack sat beside him, still leaking.

Nimbus stood quietly at the window. Far above the treetops, the stars twinkled.

One of them… seemed to shimmer back.
