Tigers learn to hunt by playing.
Nimbus and Grum are fictional characters, but often, they must deal with real world problems, grow emotionally, and learn new things along their many adventures. As you, or an audience, follow along I hope that a few real valuable nuggets can be gathered. I myself have learned a lot, and even think “How would Grum solve this?” or “What would Nimbus say?” in real world scenarios.
Of course, it’s more about the fun, but there are many opportunities to practice abstract thinking, analogous logic, and timeline interpretation. These books use recurring mythical materials with well anchored, rule driven properties. Several artifacts and characters appear throughout the series, leading to mystery solving, continuity, and development of backstories. Most of the books take place in a specific era, all realistic tech is kept appropriate to the time period.
Nimbus and Grum take core concepts of abstractly understanding history, technology, materials, and many other things into a lovable story. If you love to learn, reading these may even feel like obtaining new knowledge. Though nothing is directly learned, the hope is to carve pathways in the mind for learning to grow.
Throughout the website I’ll be adding numerous learning opportunities beyond the books. Back in elementary school, I was assigned reading and took a little quiz on the computer, and would like to bring some of that vibe to the learning here. The quizzes would require actually understanding the content of the book, not just words from a skim. My goal is to keep readers engaged, but not bog them down with testing. I’ll be implementing creative approaches to unlock the next book, or explore a region of Glimmerglen. Digital interaction is way better now and will continue to improve.
